Five Books That Had No Business Keeping Me Up This Late

September 3, 2026 • 5-minute read • Book Recommendations
Five dark, twisty reads that reminded me why “just one more chapter” is almost always a lie.
There are books you enjoy, close, and peacefully go about your evening.
And then there are the books that have absolutely no respect for your bedtime.
You tell yourself you'll read one more chapter. Suddenly it's much later than you intended, you're suspicious of everybody, and putting the book down is no longer an option.
These are five of those books for me.
They're not all the same kind of story. Some are suspenseful. Some are dark. Some hit you emotionally. And a couple are just completely unhinged.
But every one of them gave me that feeling I love as a reader:
I need to know what happens next.
No major spoilers ahead, because I'm not that kind of person.
Well...not when it comes to books, anyway.
1. Cutthroat — Octavia Grant
Let me start by saying that nearly everyone in this book has something going on.
The suspense alone kept me reading, but some of the things these characters were willing to do had me wondering how somebody even THINKS of this stuff.
And honestly, Octavia lives up to her title as the Queen of Unhinged, because there were moments when I seriously thought, Girl...how did you even THINK of this?
And Evie?
The way she decided to get back at her husband was...dare I say it...inspirational?
Now, before anybody gets concerned: I would never go that far. 😂
But the fact that Octavia thought of it, wrote it down, and then had me sitting there like, You know what...I get it, is exactly why I had so much fun with this book.
I also thought I had a pretty good idea where everything was going.
I did not.
That ending got me.
And then there was that whole “I'm your mama now” moment.
GIRL.
If you've read the book, you already know.
That was crazy.
2. The Teacher — Freida McFadden
Freida McFadden had me looking sideways at this husband for entirely too long.
That's about all I'm willing to say about that.
One of the things I enjoyed most about The Teacher was how often my opinion of the characters changed. Just when I thought I had somebody figured out, something happened that made me rethink everything.
And the wife?
Let's just say I appreciated her ability to get her getback.
I certainly wasn't mad at her.
The ending was great, too. Just when I thought we were done with the surprises...nope.
There was one more waiting for me at the end.
I loved it.
3. Ace of Spades — Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
I had this book sitting on my shelf for a while before I finally picked it up.
I should've picked it up sooner.
Ace of Spades isn't scary in the traditional sense. What got me was everything happening beneath the surface: the racism, manipulation, secrets, schemes, and the emotional and psychological pressure being put on these characters.
It was A LOT.
And every time I thought I understood what was happening, there was another piece of the puzzle.
This book had me on edge because I needed to know who was behind everything and how far they were willing to take it.
The twists and turns were so good, and by the time I finished, I was just mad at myself for letting it sit on my shelf for so long.
Lesson learned.
Sometimes the book you've been ignoring is quietly waiting to ruin your evening plans.
4. White Smoke — Tiffany D. Jackson
This one is an oldie but goodie for me.
White Smoke was one of the books I read when I first started getting back into reading, so it'll probably always have a special place on my bookshelf.
And this book was creepy.
What I loved most was not knowing what was going on.
You know something isn't right.
But WHAT isn't right?
Is something actually happening? Is there an explanation for all of it? Can you trust what you're being told?
I love when a book can keep me in that uncomfortable little space where I know something is wrong but can't quite figure out what.
White Smoke did that really well.
It had me questioning everything right along with the characters, and I loved the not knowing.
5. Razorblade Tears — S. A. Cosby
This one hit differently.
At the center of the story are two fathers who come together after losing their sons.
They have their own histories, their own regrets, and some very real differences between them.
Watching them work through those differences and come together for their sons was one of my favorite parts of the book.
And yes, there was revenge.
I can't pretend I wasn't rooting for it.
There was also a twist that I could feel coming. I knew something was up, but I couldn't quite figure out exactly what it was.
And I like that.
Give me enough to make me suspicious, but don't make it so obvious that I've solved the whole thing halfway through the book.
The ending was a little sad, but I loved seeing these two fathers fight for their sons and do what they felt they needed to do to avenge them.
This one definitely stayed with me after I finished it.
Apparently, I Have a Type
Looking at these five books together, I may have learned something about myself.
Give me secrets.
Give me characters making questionable decisions.
Give me revenge.
Give me twists I don't see coming.
Give me a situation where I don't quite know who to trust.
And apparently...
give me somebody getting their getback.
😂
I'll keep reading.
So now I'm curious:
What book had absolutely no business keeping you up as late as it did?
Because apparently my TBR isn't long enough already.
Thank you for taking a seat.
Until next time,
