Why Labalaba?
Every name has a story.
Ours began with a butterfly.
When it came time to name our publishing house, we wanted a name that reflected the kind of stories we hope to share—stories of transformation, resilience, and quiet strength. We found that spirit in a single word: Labalaba.
The name comes from the Yoruba language, spoken primarily in southwestern Nigeria and neighboring regions of West Africa, where labalaba means butterfly.
Long before Midnight Labalaba Press existed, the butterfly had already found its way into our stories. It appeared again and again—not simply as an image, but as a reminder that people are rarely what they first appear to be.
For us, the butterfly represents transformation, resilience, hope, and the quiet strength that often emerges through life's greatest challenges. It reminds us that meaningful change is rarely instant, and that the most beautiful journeys are often the hardest.
